About

An independent site that explains how trade policy and climate policy affect each other, written for students, journalists, people in business and anyone new to the subject.

Discussions about trade and climate are full of acronyms, legal references and technical terms. Entwined tries to make the underlying ideas accessible: what a border carbon adjustment actually does, why governments worry about carbon leakage, how voluntary sustainability standards work, and where the rules of the World Trade Organization fit in.

What you will find here

  • Explainers that define the key terms and set out the main policy options.
  • The arguments that are commonly made for and against those options, presented as fairly as we can.
  • Pointers on where to look for official, current information.

What this site is not

Entwined is not a research institute, a think tank or a consultancy. It does not publish original research, commission studies, lobby for particular policies or give legal advice. When rules change, the official texts of the institutions concerned are the authoritative source.

Independence

This website is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a continuation of the former ENTWINED research programme on trade and environment, which previously used this domain, or with any of the institutions that took part in it. None of its former publications are reproduced here.
